Veteran Nigerian comedian, Ali Baba has disclosed that he has been able to stay off political axe of leaders especially former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, because they have been friends.
According to the comedian who described Baba as Obasanjo is fondly called, as ‘Glue,’ who does not release money for anything, says as a comedian consciousness needs to be put into consideration to enable a good delivery of the jokes.
He said, “You take the person’ character, load it with a bit of humour and then drop the punch line but the thing is you work on the thin line between being funny and offensive and the ability to do this makes you a better comedian.”
Ali Baba revealed that what saved him while making jest of the former President was that he (Obasanjo) had already welcomed him into the Presidential villa as a friend before he found how much he (Ali Baba) was earning per event.
“The day he found out how much I was earning, he was crazy. He said, ‘what does he do? He comes here, cracks jokes, abuses everybody, you still pay him’ he was not happy,” he expressed.
Swiftly, the comedian acknowledged that Obasanjo, has contributed a lot for the growth of comedy in Nigeria for giving him the opportunity to have attended state functions which shows that doors have indeed opened for other comedians to grow.
