For allegedly stealing a bag of clothes at a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) terminus, a 44-year-old woman, Bolanle Awosika, on Thursday appeared before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
Awosika, of No. 14, Ajadi Lawal St., Ikorodu, Lagos, is facing a count charge.
She, however, denied committing the offence.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Daniel Ighodalo, told the court that Awosika committed the offence at 3:00p.m., on 2 December, at a BRT terminus at Idumota on Lagos Island.
He said that the accused stole a sack containing male and female clothes valued at N150,000.
The prosecutor said that the clothes belonged to a trader, Mrs Christiana Olala.
According to Ighodalo, Olala asked Awosika, who was in a queue with her, to assist her to carry the sack. Ighodalo said: “By the time Olala returned, Awosika had disappeared with the sack of clothes.”
The prosecutor said that luck, however, ran out on the accused when the complainant spotted her at the same bus stop on 9 December.
He said that Olala raised an alarm which alerted passersby who apprehended Awosika and handed her over to the police.
Ighodalo said that the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
NAN reports that Section 285 stipulates three years imprisonment for stealing.
The Magistrate, Mrs O.M. Ajayi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum, and adjourned the case to 15 December for mention.
